Most people pay a lot of attention to the transition between the colder months of winter and the warmer months of spring. As discussed in ‘Why Spring Cleaning is Important to Your Health’, most people take the time to do some spring cleaning, decluttering, and dusting in the early spring. However, once that transitional period has passed, many grow lax and fail to take the necessary precautions to stay healthy throughout the summer months.

There are many health hazards that emerge in the summer, and there are some general tips you can follow to ensure that you stay healthy throughout the season. Here are some of them:

Stay Stay Hydrated

Dehydration generally occurs when you lose a lot of bodily fluids through sweating and exercise, but it’s important that you don’t turn to sugary drinks and alcohol to combat that thirst. Parsley Health explains that drinking carbonated drinks can put stress on the digestive system and cause uncomfortable bloating. Make a habit of carrying a refillable water bottle with you and drink from that regularly, and if you want something a bit more flavorful, make a hydrating beverage by putting half a sliced cucumber, one sliced lemon, and 5 or 6 fresh mint leaves in a pitcher of water and leaving it in the fridge.

Eat Healthily

Summer usually means barbeques, parties, and beach trips, and this can wreak havoc on your diet if you’re not careful. It’s important that you find a way to balance having fun with eating good food that your body needs. It’s also a good idea to eat food that’s in season: NDTV documents that food in season has much more flavour and texture, and are extremely high in essential nutrients. Eat a lot of green vegetables, melons, peaches, corn, mangoes, and other fresh herbs – you can even make a trip out of visiting the local farmer’s market with your family.

Wear the Right Sunscreen

It’s usually something that’s often repeated: wear sunscreen every day, even when you’re not going to the beach! However, recent data from the US Food and Drug Administration shows that some sunscreen ingredients may be harmful to you in the long run. Most experts recommend using a broad-spectrum, mineral sunscreen which contains zinc oxide, as this can block both UVA and UVB rays. Remember that for sunscreen to be effective, it has to be reapplied every two to nine hours – even if the sunscreen is water-resistant!

Take Breaks from the Heat

Here’s a great tip from the Red Cross: “Seek relief from the heat during the warmest part of the day in places like schools, libraries, theaters, malls, etc.” It’s best to stay in air-conditioned rooms during the hottest parts of the day, but if that’s not an option for you, visit a library or the mall to cool off. That being said, it’s also important that you try to avoid extreme changes in temperature, as these can lead to fainting spells if you’re not careful!

We hope you’ve found these tips to stay healthy and safe useful – feel free to share them with your family and friends too!
